Description
A jaunty mulberry neck label heralds this monster Meunier-only white sparkler from the astonishing 2018 vintage...
Before this epic harvest we had never had enough volume to produce a vintage alongside our CLASSIC and PINK NVs, but in 2018, not only was the yield very generous, but the Pinot Meunier base wines were out of this world and we decided there and then that they could stand on their own. Some of you may have tasted the 75cl version of this - stand by to move to another level...
Normally seen as a 'filler' in France, Meunier in the cooler and wetter UK seems to thrive and to produce fascinating and complex fruit worthy of its own bottle. This release is made from 4 of our different Meunier cuvées of which 40% went through malolactic fermentation (to soften any acidity) and just 5% had contact with some very gentle oak for texture. This magnum has spent 48 months on lees and was disgorged in September 2023 to 12 grammes of residual sugar - a magnificent and luxurious balance.
Tasting Notes
Ripe, fresh and creamy charachter thanks to extended time on lees and being aged in magnum. Plump, soft apricots and heady summer evening florals are currently at the fore, but with further time under cork, nuts and sweet spice characters will develop. The characteristic Pinot Meunier oiliness on the palate shrouds a fine backbone of saline acidity. Ripe, bold and uncomplicatedly moreish.
Pairs well with
We think this has the acidity to pair well with almost any food but try it with
- devils on horseback
- an Eccles cake
- maybe even chicken liver pâté...
