Description

A jaunty mulberry neck label heralds this unusual Meunier-only white sparkler from the astonishing 2020 vintage...

Normally seen as a 'filler' in France, Meunier in the cooler and wetter UK seems to thrive and to produce fascinating and complex fruit worthy of its own bottle. This release is made from 4 of our different Meunier cuvées of which 40% went through malolactic fermentation (to soften any acidity) and 52% had contact with some very gentle oak for texture. It spent just 26 months on lees and  was disgorged in September '23 (to allow time for tertiary development) with 7.5 grammes of residual sugar resulting in a magnificent and luxurious balance.

Tasting Notes

Luscious white stone and orchard fruit on the nose that integrates with lightly toasted nuts, sweet spice, and buttered patisserie. The palate is oily and mouthcoating yet balanced by a refreshing saline acidity. An IWC gold medal winner 2024.

Pairs well with

Try the WFB with:

  • Cured meats
  • Buttery mince pies
  • Leftover turkey gratin
  • Crumbly, creamy cheddar

The palate is initially racy, with a focus on citrus and chalky minerality. What I really enjoyed about the The Grange was the softness. The bubbles are fine and smooth and there’s a lovely generosity and warmth to the fruit on the mid-taste, and almost a honeyed tropical fruit note. The finish is more red fruit-led, and closes off this thoroughly enjoyable release.
